YMCA Certified Open Water SCUBA And Snorkeling Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a comprehensive 40 hour Snorkeling and SCUBA course. It consists of 20 hours of class room lectures and 20 hours of practical pool time. Upon completion of this phase of instruction the participant will be permitted to make open water dives to become a certified SCUBA diver. The open water dives are conducted in late May, June and July at White Star Quarry in Gibsonburg. This is a SCUBA training facility. Two dives per day on three different days (6 total dives) will be necessary for certification. These dives are usually conducted on Saturday or Sunday mornings, or if needed, other special arrangements can be made. Dives should be finished by 12:00 noon on dive days. Also, special arrangements can be made to complete the open water dives at other facilities such as in the Caribbean.

Required equipment of the course will be personal maks, fins and snorkel. These are needed the first day of class. All other classroom and pool equipment will be provided. Equipment needed for the oper water dives can be rented from the dive shop for a nominal fee it the student does not have his own.

This 10 week course is held at the Sandusky YMCA, 2101 West Perkins Avenue, in a heated 88° F pool. Certification issued.

1. How old do I need to be to learn to SCUBA dive?
Answer
In order to take a YMCA SCUBA certification course, individuals must be 15 years of age or older. Children ages 12-14 may earn the Junior Open Water Diver certification that requires them to dive with an adult diver.

2. How long does a certification course last?
Answer
The YMCA SCUBA Open Water course includes approximately 32 hours of training in classroom and pool or confined water. These classes occur during day or evening classes from a couple of weekends to several weeks, depending on scheduling.

3. How much does a certification course cost?
Answer
Please contact the Dive Shop or the Instructor for current costs.

4. What equipment will I need to begin a course?
Answer
You need only a mask, snorkel and fins and a text book to begin the course. Other necessary equipment and materials during the pool sessions are provided as part of the course cost.  varies. Please see equipment required during the check-out (open water) dives below.

5. How do I get started?

6. What about check-out (open water) dives?
Answer
Check-out dives in open water are required to complete the course and obtain the YMCA SCUBA Open Water Diver Certification. These dives are usually done at White Star Park and Quarry, Gibsonburg, Ohio. A wet suit, hood, gloves, boots, tank, Buoyancy Compensator (B.C.) and regulator are required for the open water dives in Ohio and surrounding area. If you do not have your own equipment, these may be rented on a daily basis from the Dive Shop.
